Lagoa Santa or Caldas Novas: which one for thermal springs?

The two thermal destinations of Goiás serve different kinds of traveler. Compare prices, facilities and distances, and see how to combine both in one trip.

Updated on 2026-10-08

Caldas Novas is the largest hydrothermal resort area in the world by water volume, with dozens of water parks and hotels and around 100,000 inhabitants. Lagoa Santa is a town of 1,400 people with a single natural warm lagoon, crystal clear and surrounded by woodland. Both are in the state of Goiás, Brazil, and both have hot water springing from the ground, but the experiences could not be more different. This comparison is not trying to convince you of anything: it simply helps you pick the right destination for your kind of trip.

Traveler profile

Caldas Novas and Rio Quente cater to those who want organized fun: water slides, wave pools, lazy rivers, shows, resorts with children's programs and nightlife. It is the destination for a packed family vacation and for anyone who likes having everything within reach.

Lagoa Santa caters to those who want the opposite: waking up early, slipping into a 31 °C lagoon with mist hanging over the water, watching schools of fish pass between your legs, strolling the boardwalks through the woods, and fishing or taking a boat trip on the Rio Aporé in the afternoon. There are no lines, no loud music, and the whole town can be covered on foot.

Facilities

Caldas Novas has dozens of water parks and bathing clubs, hotels of every size, restaurants, shopping malls and big-city services. Hot Park, in Rio Quente, is the region's best-known park and is open Friday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In Lagoa Santa, the facilities are concentrated in two places: Thermas Lagoa Santa, which brings together the hot-spring lagoon, a 32-room hotel, pools with water slides, a sauna, trails and a restaurant, and Balneário Kin Gin, in the town center, with five thermal-water pools, a water slide, barbecue grills and a guesthouse. Beyond that, family-run guesthouses (pousadas), vacation rentals and simple restaurants. See the list under Lodging.

Price

This is the most objective difference. Adult admission to Hot Park starts at around R$ 242, Brazilian reais (approx. USD 44), in 2026 (guests of the Rio Quente Resorts hotels have access included). In Lagoa Santa, a day pass to the lagoon at the Thermas has a reference price of about R$ 40 per person (approx. USD 7). Lodging follows the same logic: in Caldas Novas the price range runs from budget guesthouses to expensive resorts; in Lagoa Santa nearly everything is a guesthouse or vacation rental, with the Hotel Thermas at the upper end.

Prices are for reference only and change by season. Confirm Hot Park admission on the park's official website and the Thermas day pass by phone at (64) 3640-1122 (from abroad: +55 64 3640-1122) before traveling.

Crowds and nature

Caldas Novas receives large flows of tourists all year, peaking in July, on holidays and at the end of the year; the thermal water is drawn from wells and heated naturally, but it goes into man-made pools. In Lagoa Santa the lagoon is natural, fed by the Guarani Aquifer at a rate of 3.6 million liters per hour, with a sandy bottom and plants and fish living in it. Even in high season the crowd numbers in the dozens, not the thousands. Details on the water under Thermal springs.

Go to Caldas Novas if...

  • You travel with children who want water slides, wave pools and rides all day long.
  • You prefer an all-inclusive resort with scheduled activities and a variety of restaurants.
  • You want nightlife, shows and shopping.
  • You are leaving from Goiânia or Brasília and only have a weekend.

Go to Lagoa Santa if...

  • You want natural thermal water with a sandy bottom, plants and fish, not a swimming pool.
  • You are after silence, nature and a place where nobody is in a hurry.
  • You enjoy fishing, boat trips or photographing a misty dawn.
  • You want to spend less on admission and lodging.
  • You are leaving from São Paulo, the Triângulo Mineiro region or Mato Grosso do Sul.

Can you combine the two?

You can, but not in a weekend. The two destinations are about 450 km apart, which means a full day on the road. One itinerary that works is to leave Goiânia, spend two or three days in Caldas Novas, head southwest through Rio Verde and Caçu to Lagoa Santa, and stay two more days of rest before heading back, or continue on to Mato Grosso do Sul via Paranaíba. Travelers coming from São Paulo can do it in reverse: Lagoa Santa first, then Caldas Novas, and return through the Triângulo Mineiro. See the suggested day-by-day plan in the 2-day itinerary.

Is Lagoa Santa cheaper than Caldas Novas?

Generally, yes. A day pass to the lagoon costs about R$ 40 (reference price), while Hot Park admission starts at roughly R$ 242. Lodging in guesthouses and vacation rentals also tends to be more affordable. Confirm current prices before traveling.

Does Lagoa Santa have water slides and a water park?

It does, on a small scale: the Thermas has pools with water slides (for hotel guests) and Balneário Kin Gin has five thermal pools and a water slide. Do not expect the scale of a Caldas Novas park.

How far is it from Caldas Novas to Lagoa Santa?

Approximately 450 km, about a full day's drive, passing through Rio Verde, Caçu and Itajá. It is not a day trip.

Is the water in Lagoa Santa as warm as in Caldas Novas?

The lagoon stays between 29 and 33 °C, averaging 31 °C, warm all year round. The pools in Caldas Novas vary by park; many are in a similar range or slightly warmer.
