Lagoa Santa (GO) anniversary: July 21

A municipal holiday celebrating the 1997 emancipation, in the middle of the holiday season and the mist over the lagoon.

Updated on 2026-10-08

Every July 21, Lagoa Santa celebrates the anniversary of its emancipation. The date marks Goiás State Law 13,134 of July 21, 1997, which turned the former district of Termas de Itajá into a municipality. It is a municipal holiday and falls in the middle of the July school holidays, when the town is already full of visitors because of the thermal lagoon. In 2026 the municipality turned 29; in 2027 it reaches 30.

Why July 21

The administrative history of Lagoa Santa is short and fits into three dates:

  • 1988: the area around the thermal lagoon, until then part of the municipality of Itajá, is raised to the status of district with the name Termas de Itajá. The name comes from the waters that had been attracting bathers since the late 19th century.
  • July 21, 1997: State Law 13,134 creates the municipality of Lagoa Santa, split off from Itajá. This is the date celebrated as the town's anniversary.
  • January 1, 2001: official installation of the municipality, with the swearing-in of the first elected administration. From then on Lagoa Santa has its own City Hall and Town Council.

What sustained the emancipation was tourism. The Hotel Thermas Lagoa Santa, opened in July 1990 in the woods around the lagoon, brought enough visitors and commerce to justify an autonomous municipality. The full story, from the first backcountry explorers, is on History of Lagoa Santa.

What happens on the anniversary

The celebration is organized by the City Hall and varies from year to year, depending on the budget and the calendar. The usual format of town anniversary celebrations in Goiás, which Lagoa Santa follows, combines:

  • Civic ceremony: raising of the flags, performance of the municipal anthem and tributes to residents and pioneers, usually at the City Hall or in a public square.
  • Concerts and popular festival: musical performances, often at the Clarito Pereira Campos Municipal Lake, the same venue as Carnalagoa and the Fishing Festival.
  • Sports and cultural activities: tournaments, school performances and fairs, depending on the edition.

For the 2026 edition and the 30th anniversary in 2027, the detailed program should be checked on the City Hall's channels: lagoasanta.go.gov.br/noticias/, phone (64) 3640-1303 and WhatsApp (64) 99612-9341. It is usually announced in the preceding weeks.

A holiday in the middle of the high season

July 21 has a peculiarity: it is the town's only exclusive municipal holiday (the other, October 12, day of the patron saint Nossa Senhora Aparecida, coincides with the national holiday), and it falls right in the high season. July brings three factors together:

  • School holidays, which bring families from Goiânia, Brasília, Campo Grande and inland São Paulo state.
  • Dry weather and cold early mornings, which produce the mist over the thermal lagoon at dawn, Lagoa Santa's most photographed postcard view.
  • The holiday itself, which in 2026 fell on a Tuesday and in 2027 will fall on a Wednesday, leading many people to bridge it with the weekend.

The result: hotels, guesthouses and holiday homes fill up, and the lagoon is at its busiest. If you want to enjoy the festival, book early. If you want silence, choose the following week or August, which keeps the dry weather with fewer people. More about the seasons on When to go.

Services on the holiday. On July 21 the City Hall and most municipal offices close. Banks and shops follow their own rules for municipal holidays; confirm. The Thermas, the Kin Gin water park and the guesthouses operate normally, on a high-season basis.

Practical tips for visiting on the anniversary

  • Lodging: book weeks in advance and check whether the July or holiday rate is different. See the full list on Where to stay.
  • Arrive early: the access roads are single-lane and the last stretch (GO-302, from Itajá) is better in daylight. From Goiânia it is about 430 km and 6 to 6.5 hours.
  • What to bring: swimwear and a towel, but also warm clothes. In July the early morning can get close to 10 °C, and the contrast with the 31 °C water is what creates the mist. Bring moisturizer and lip balm: the dry air is uncomfortable.
  • Fuel: fill up in Rio Verde, Caçu, Itajá or Paranaíba; local supply is limited.
  • Symbols: the flag and coat of arms of Lagoa Santa appear at the anniversary ceremonies. Learn their meaning on Municipal symbols.
How old will Lagoa Santa be in 2027?

Thirty years since emancipation. The municipality was created by State Law 13,134 of July 21, 1997, and installed on January 1, 2001. The official anniversary count uses the date of the law.

Is July 21 a holiday in Lagoa Santa?

Yes, it is a municipal holiday. It applies only within the municipality: City Hall offices close, and shops follow local rules. See the full list on Holidays 2026 and 2027.

What was Lagoa Santa called before emancipation?

Termas de Itajá, a district created in 1988 within the municipality of Itajá. The name Lagoa Santa ("Holy Lagoon") comes from the tradition that the thermal lagoon had healing powers, told since the first backcountry explorers, between 1880 and 1900.
